Choosing the right Virgin Voyages cabin involves more than deciding between an Insider, Sea View, Sea Terrace or RockStar. The cabin category determines the general size and features, but the exact location can affect noise, motion, convenience, balcony configuration and how much control you have after booking.
Before paying a deposit, understand the cabin category, fare restrictions and general locations you prefer. Once Virgin Voyages assigns the cabin, check the exact location immediately. Review what is above and below it, its distance from elevators and any balcony restrictions. If your fare allows cabin changes, request another available cabin before completing payment.
Cabin Mistakes at a Glance
1. Failing to check the assigned cabin’s exact location
You cannot inspect the exact cabin location until Virgin Voyages creates the reservation and assigns a cabin number. That makes the period immediately after assignment important. If the selected fare permits cabin changes, this is when you should review the location and request another available cabin if necessary.
Some Insider and Sea View cabins on Deck 5 are below entertainment venues on Deck 6. Depending on the exact location, that can place a cabin near or beneath spaces such as The Manor or The Red Room.
The Manor is Virgin Voyages' nightclub and entertainment space, located across Decks 6 and 7. Cabins near active entertainment venues can be exposed to late-night music or bass. The Red Room is Virgin Voyages' main performance space, and activity there can also create noise depending on the event, time and cabin location.
That does not make every cabin on Deck 5 a bad choice. Deck 5 can be a practical option for travelers who want an Insider or Sea View cabin, prioritize price and expect to stay out late. It is a less predictable choice for light sleepers or anyone who usually turns in early.
How to check your cabin after it is assigned
- Find the assigned cabin number in the reservation.
- Locate it on the deck plan for the exact ship.
- Find the same forward-to-aft position on the deck above.
- Check the corresponding position on the deck below.
- Look for entertainment venues, restaurants, kitchens, gyms, pools, service areas and crew spaces.
- Check the distance from elevators and stairs.
- If the fare permits changes, request another available location before paying the deposit.
Scarlet Lady, Valiant Lady, Resilient Lady and Brilliant Lady share a broadly similar design, but they are not identical. Venues, cabin categories and individual configurations can differ. An old screenshot or a deck plan from another ship is not enough to confirm your location.
Bottom line: Deck 5 can offer good value, but the exact location matters. If sleep is a priority, check what is above and below the assigned cabin before paying the deposit. If the fare allows changes, request a quieter available location.
2. Assuming a Limited View Sea Terrace only means a partially blocked view
Many Limited View Sea Terrace cabins are located on Deck 8. The category can cost less than a standard Sea Terrace, but the word “view” does not describe every possible difference.
Depending on the specific cabin, the balcony area may include or overlook:

- Lifeboats or ship equipment
- Structural panels
- A solid metal balcony front instead of a glass railing
- A balcony with a different size or shape
- An egg-style chair instead of the standard red hammock
Virgin Voyages notes that Sea Terrace layouts and balcony configurations can vary. That is why it is risky to assume that every Sea Terrace will look exactly like the cabin shown in a promotional photo or tour video.
A Limited View cabin is not automatically a poor cabin. One of our clients received a metal-front balcony with an egg chair rather than the standard hammock setup. She found the balcony roomy and comfortable and enjoyed the cabin.
The problem is not the configuration itself. The problem is booking it without knowing that the balcony may differ from what you expected.
Do all Virgin Voyages Sea Terrace cabins have hammocks?
No. Many Sea Terrace cabins include Virgin Voyages' signature red hammock, but not every balcony can accommodate one. Certain Limited View cabins and other nonstandard balcony configurations may have a different chair or seating arrangement.
If the hammock is important to you, avoid assuming that every Sea Terrace includes one. Once the cabin is assigned, check the specific balcony configuration immediately. If the fare permits cabin changes, ask about another available cabin if the assigned balcony does not meet your needs.
Bottom line: A Limited View Sea Terrace may be a reasonable way to save money, but the tradeoff can involve more than a partially blocked view.

3. Assuming a higher deck or suite automatically means a better location
A higher deck may sound more desirable, but height alone does not determine cabin quality.
Deck 14 is directly below Deck 15, which contains busy public areas such as The Galley, the pool deck, the gym and service spaces. Depending on the cabin's exact position, potential noise can include:

- Chairs or loungers being moved
- Carts rolling through service areas
- Foot traffic
- Morning setup and cleaning
- Music from the pool deck
- Exercise classes or weights in the gym
Unlike nightclub noise, public-space and operational noise may happen early in the morning, during the day or late at night.
This also applies to suites. Brilliant Suites are on Deck 14, and some locations sit beneath busier portions of the pool or fitness areas. Paying for RockStar status gives you more space, a larger terrace and additional perks. It does not eliminate the public venue above the ceiling.
We recently helped a client booking a Brilliant Suite move away from the pool area to a location beneath the yoga room. Both cabins were in the same suite category, but their positions on the deck created different potential noise conditions.
There is no rule that every cabin beneath The Galley or gym will be noisy. One section of a large venue can be quieter than another. A cabin beneath a yoga or stretching space may have a different noise profile from one beneath exercise equipment. That is why the exact cabin number matters more than a broad warning about an entire deck.
Bottom line: Deck 14 is not automatically a deck to avoid. Once the cabin or suite is assigned, compare its exact position with Deck 15. If the fare allows changes, request another available location before paying the deposit.
4. Choosing the lowest fare without understanding the restrictions
Cabin strategy and fare strategy are connected. A traveler can research the ideal deck and location, then choose a fare that does not allow them to select or change the cabin.
How Virgin Voyages Lock It In Rates work
A Lock It In Rate is a lower-priced guarantee fare. You choose a cabin category, but Virgin Voyages chooses the exact cabin and may assign it as late as the sailing date. The assigned cabin will meet at least the guaranteed category and may be upgraded to a higher category.
The lower price comes with important restrictions:

- The booking is generally nonrefundable, apart from applicable taxes and fees.
- It does not receive the standard seven-day grace period.
- Changing the sailing date is restricted.
- Virgin may assign the cabin as late as the day of sailing.
- Once the cabin is assigned, change requests are not accepted.
That means a traveler may receive an excellent cabin or a location they would not have chosen. Anyone with a specific requirement involving noise, motion, accessibility, balcony configuration or proximity to other travelers should be careful with a guarantee rate.
Lock It In can still make financial sense. We have used it ourselves and once saved more than $1,000 on a suite. For that particular sailing, the discount was worth giving up control of the location.
Base, Essential and Premium fares
Virgin Voyages' VoyageFair Choices apply to Sea Terrace cabins and below. The three main options are Base, Essential and Premium.

- Base is the least flexible option. It is intended for travelers prioritizing the lowest available price and does not permit cabin, date or name changes.
- Essential provides more standard flexibility, subject to Virgin Voyages' current terms and availability.
- Premium provides the greatest flexibility and additional benefits.
Base, Essential and Premium are currently presented for Sea Terrace cabins and below. RockStar, Mega RockStar and Lock It In bookings follow different pricing and restriction structures. Lock It In guarantee rates also have separate restrictions.
Fare terms, inclusions and pricing can change, so review the rules shown for the exact reservation before paying the deposit.
The right question is not simply, “How much can we save?” It is, “What control are we giving up, and are we comfortable with that tradeoff?”
Bottom line: The cheapest fare can be a smart purchase for a flexible traveler. It is a risky choice for someone who needs a particular location or wants the ability to make changes.
5. Choosing a cabin category without considering how you will use the cabin
There is no single best Virgin Voyages cabin for every traveler.
The best cabin depends on how much time you expect to spend there, which features matter to you and how much you are willing to pay for them.
Insider
An Insider can be a strong value for travelers who want a dark place to sleep, spend most of the day around the ship and do not need natural light or private outdoor space.
Sea View
A Sea View adds natural light and an ocean view without the cost of a balcony. It can work well for travelers who do not expect to spend much time outside the cabin but do not want an interior room.
Sea Terrace or Central Sea Terrace
For many first-time Virgin Voyages travelers, a regular Sea Terrace or Central Sea Terrace is a balanced starting point. It provides natural light, fresh air, a private balcony and, in most standard configurations, the signature hammock without automatically moving into suite pricing.
The safest location is generally one with passenger cabins directly above and below it, although every traveler should still check the exact deck plan.
XL Sea Terrace
An XL Sea Terrace provides additional room and a larger bathroom layout. The extra space can be useful for couples getting ready at the same time or travelers taking a longer sailing.
RockStar or Mega RockStar Suite
A suite may be worth the additional cost when the cabin itself is part of the celebration, the itinerary includes several sea days or the traveler places a high value on space, terrace size and suite benefits.
It is still important to check the location. A suite category and a quiet location are two separate considerations.
Bottom line: The best Virgin Voyages cabin is not automatically the cheapest or the most expensive. It is the cabin that matches the way you plan to use it.

What is the best deck on Virgin Voyages?
There is no universal best deck. For travelers who prioritize quiet, a cabin on a deck with cabins directly above and below it is usually a safer choice than one beneath or above a nightclub, theater, pool, gym, restaurant or service area.
The middle passenger decks can also be appealing to travelers concerned about motion or long elevator trips, but the exact cabin position still matters. Check the deck plan rather than choosing based on the deck number alone.
